What it does
It remembers you
Yesterday's mood, last week's project, the small things you mentioned in passing. The thing users told Woebot's research team mattered most.
It never uses shame
Rejection-sensitive dysphoria is real. Companion validates first, redirects second. No streaks with punishment. No "you failed."
The next 60 seconds
Not the whole project. Not the day's plan. The next 60 seconds โ the only unit of time ADHD executive function can reliably operate in.
Protects your flow
When you're locked in, Companion goes quiet. Hyperfocus is a feature, not a bug.
Body-doubling presence
"I'm here if you need me" mode for the tasks you can't face alone. Backed by 2024 research on virtual body doubling (n=117).
Sometimes tells you to log off
A real friend doesn't want you glued to your phone. Neither does Companion. MIT's 2025 study shows dependency costs climb โ we built against that.
Built on the actual research
Not vibes. Peer-reviewed science.
- Fitzpatrick et al. (2017, JMIR Mental Health) โ the Woebot RCT: a daily 2-minute CBT micro-conversation cut PHQ-9 depression scores in college students in 2 weeks (p=0.01).
- Nyakhar & Wang (2025, Frontiers in Psychiatry) โ systematic review of 9 studies, n=1,082: 8 of 9 showed significant mental-health improvements with CBT chatbots.
- Barkley's 40-year research โ ADHD is an executive-function disorder, not an attention problem. Initiation is the lost function. Companion offloads it.
- Dodson's work on RSD โ emotional dysregulation in ADHD is real and requires validate-first response patterns. We do that by default.
- MIT Media Lab 2025 โ extended AI-companion use has rising psychosocial costs. Companion is built for bounded use, not unbounded engagement.
